Water scarcity is no longer a future risk. It’s a reality across both northern and southern Europe.
Water stress is no longer a distant warning. It is already part of everyday life for nearly 30 percent of Europeans, and climate change is only tightening the tap. The study, commissioned by the European Parliament's Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA), which I have co-authored, looks ahead to how water availability and use could evolve across the EU and lays out practical policy ideas to ensure people and businesses can rely on this essential resource. The message is clear. Europe needs urgent action now, paired with deeper reforms, if we want to remain resilient by 2030 and 2050.
